Adults-Community Support Services

CSS serves area adults with a Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI).  Through our
community support services, participants receive a variety of services determined by their
individual treatment plans.

Case Management: When a consumer is referred to CSS, a case manager is assigned to
assist in developing a treatment plan utilizing the Strength Assessment Model of Case
Management.  Consumers actively participate with their case manager in formulating goals and
objectives to assist in maintaining their independence and autonomy.

Attendant Care: A service involving one-on-one assignment of a trained staff member to
provide support/training to a consumer to avoid referral to  more intensive services and/or to
maintain community tenure.  Activities are tailored to individual needs, but may include
assistance with grocery shopping and cooking nutritious meals, instruction about using
community resources, and medication monitoring.

Psychosocial Groups: Psychosocial groups are open to any CSS client and are held nearly
every weekday. Groups focus on building skills for independent living, such as financial
management, personal health care, nutrition classes, and other areas. Groups are curriculum
based and led by a trained staff member.

Supported Employment Specialist: A full-time Supported Employment Specialist works within
the Community Support Program at CCMHCC. Eligible individuals interested in employment
can receive assistance with employment readiness, job searches, and job coaching. The
Supported Employment Specialist helps consumers work with Vocational Rehabilitation
Services as needed.

Caregiver Services: CCMHCC provides a group of grant-funded services to assist caregivers in
coping with some of the stresses that come with taking care of a loved one. Sometimes,
caregivers struggle with depression or anxiety that seems to be much more than a bad day.
Persons who have taken responsibility of caring for a loved one may qualify for Caregiver
Services. Services include informational meetings, support groups, and individual therapy.

Children-Community Based Services

Community Based Services bring staff together with others in the community to help children
and adolescents under the age of 18 with Severe Emotional Disturbances (SED).  We work with
clients in the home, at school, and other places in the community.  A therapist determines
whether the child meets the criteria for SED and works with the family to decide which services
the child should receive.

Case Management: Case managers provide support to families and children who are at risk of
out-of-home placement. They help the family coordinate all aspects of the child's care, help find
resources, manage crisis, and monitor the child's progress.  We also work with the child and
his or her family to achieve treatment goals through various activities and interventions.

Parent Support and Education: A parent support specialist provides a support network for
parents/caretakers of SED children and youth.   We assist parents and caretakers in better
understanding SED children and how to best access resources within the community.

Attendant Care: An attendant care provider spends time with a child or family to help them work
on specific goals and activities that affect behaviors that interfere with such activities as chores,
studies, recreation, and peer relations.

Psychosocial Groups: Psychosocial groups, called "Challenger" groups, involve an adventure
based counseling program using recreational therapy to teach social skills. The curriculum is
based on the Boys Town model for social skills training. The Challenger program provides a
goal directed, therapeutic environment in which participants are empowered to achieve their
goals through carefully designed activities, which emphasize honorable agreements,
teamwork, and above all, trust.

Home-Based Family Therapy: The primary role of home-based family therapy is to prevent the
removal of a youth from the home by engaging in intensive time-limited therapy during crisis
situations. The therapist will come into the home and spend as much time as necessary to
resolve the initial family crisis. The therapist will then meet with the family as much as needed
to work on family problems to ensure the family is kept together. Home-based interventions are
not designed to resolve all problems experienced by family members, but are intended to
stabilize the family during a crisis and then to involve the family in other services to ensure the
family is kept intact.

Respite Care: Respite care is available for children/youth who are on the SED waiver. Licensed
foster homes provide this service, which gives parents a chance to have a break from the daily
care giving of SED children/youth. The waiver medical card is billed for the service, with a yearly
limit on hours. For children/youth who are not on the SED waiver, FLEX funds are occasionally
available to help pay for this service.

Independent Living: This service is available for youth 16 and older, and is designed to help
teach the necessary skills of living on one's own. A curriculum is used, to provide educational
information and activities. This service may be utilized on an individual basis or in a group
setting.

Community Day School: Community Day School is an intensive day treatment program
developed through a cooperative effort between Cowley County Mental Health and six school
districts. This comprehensive program has made a positive impact on the children, including
improved grades, greater self-esteem and overall, a higher success rate of keeping youth
within the community. This program combines academics and intensive mental health services
in a controlled setting to assist severely challenged and behaviorally disturbed students in
these areas.

Children's Crisis House:  The Crisis House located in Winfield, Kansas was opened as a joint
venture between Cowley County Mental Health & Counseling Center and Sumner County Mental
Health Center.  Started for the purpose of stabilizing children in crisis who are at risk of being
placed in a psychiatric hospital, the house is currently funded through a Kansas Grant Program.
